Basic Chicken Curry Recipe

Creating a basic chicken curry recipe is as easy as knowing how to put one together. Once you have gone through the following recipe a few times, you will be whipping up Indian food like a pro.

There is just something comforting about a great basic chicken curry recipe on a cold night. Reminiscent of your grandmother’s chicken soup, you’ll find the following recipe reassuring and tasty. The trick to any curry recipe is making sure that you have fresh spices that aren’t old, so skip those dried up ones that have been on the shelf for years…purchase new ones instead. Speaking of spices, for this recipe you will need ˝ tsp turmeric; ˝ tsp chili powder; 2 tsp. garam masala; and ˝ tsp. of ginger.

Other ingredients needed include one package of chicken breasts or legs; two onions; and one bottle of extra virgin olive oil. To begin, heat one Tbsp. of olive oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions until they are golden brown. Add the masala, and cook the masala until it becomes separated. Then, add the chicken to the pan and brown on all sides. As soon as the chicken begins to brown, add one cup of water to the dish, cover the skillet and simmer for ten minutes. Cook the chicken completely until it is tender enough to cut with ease. Add ginger, chili, and turmeric to the dish coating the chicken thoroughly.

For a truly authentic meal, serve this basic chicken curry recipe with Indian flat bread or lentils. You can really add any spice mix to this recipe in order to make it your own, so go ahead and experiment. Also, a nice side dish of cool yogurt will add an interesting taste to the entire meal. When it comes to cooking Indian food the most important thing is to take your time mixing all of the spices together. If you want to add a different sort of taste to this meal, consider adding some chopped tomatoes or mangoes – whatever tastes you like will work fairly well here.

If you cannot find masala at a store near you, it is possible to substitute it with a simple curry powder. If this is the case, make sure to take the mixture prior to using it.

Feel free to play around with this basic chicken curry recipe as much as you like. In the end, the best meals are the ones that you take the time to experiment with.
