Thai Basil Chicken Recipe

Searching for a Thai basil chicken recipe? This article will take you through the basic steps for making this classic Thai dish.

Gai Pad Gra Pow (Thai basil chicken recipe) is a famous Thai dish that can be found throughout Thailand. While this dish seems to be rather complex, like most food it is as simple as having the right ingredients. Prior to making this recipe, you may have to shop for some of the ingredients needed at a specialty shop. This recipe uses Thai chili pepper and holy basil, though regular chili peppers and sweet basil will make a decent substitute. You will also need one bunch of gra-pow leaves (these can be found in most Thai markets).

Other ingredients needed include 2 Tbsp. peanut oil; 1 Tbsp. sugar, ½ pound cut ground chicken; one clove of garlic; 3 Tbsp. fish sauce. The first thing that you will have to do is to clean off those leaves by picking them from the stem and washing them. As with any other vegetable, it is important to wash the leaves thoroughly in order to clean off any dirt particles. Chop the garlic and the chili pepper together, and place this mix aside. Then, heat up a wok with the oil and fry the garlic and chili pepper over a very high heat.

As soon as the garlic begins to brown, add the chicken and stir. Then, add the fish sauce with the sugar, and finally add the basil. Add the leaves that you cleaned before to the dish, and mix it all together. Serve this dish piping hot upon a bed of rice or leaves. You can also serve this dish with a side of fish sauce mixed with some chilies. This Thai basil chicken recipe is rather straightforward, though the taste is something extraordinary. If you don’t have any chicken, feel free to add ground turkey or other ground meat to the mix.

Some people prefer to make this dish using bite size pieces of chicken instead of ground chicken, and this is ok too. Of course, the only difference is that you will have to be sure that those pieces of chicken are cooked thoroughly prior to serving.

As you can see, there is nothing complex about making Thai basil chicken recipes. All you really need are the right ingredients, a good wok, and a few moments of your time.
