Cooking Crawfish
Is there any proper way of cooking crawfish? Well, not really… though there are some things to consider before trying out any recipe.
Since these creatures are rather small, cooking crawfish will only take about six minutes. If you can get live ones, the meat that comes off of them will be much better than the meat that comes from ones that were killed awhile ago. The only thing to remember while cooking these “mud bugs” is that they cook in only six minutes – after six minutes, they will become tough. If you can remember that, you can easily create some fantastic meals in no time.
This type of crustacean has been a Louisiana favorite for the past twenty years – in fact, it happens to be the official “state crustacean” of this jazzy town. Perhaps this is why you can often see large families boiling up to forty of them at one time in the backyard – in many ways, they are the southern hot dog. While those that come from Louisiana tend to be rather tasty, those that come from foreign waters can be a bit bland, so choose wisely.
The best method of cooking crawfish is in a large pot of boiling water that has been seasoned with salt and crawfish seasoning (you can buy this in specialty shops). Once they have been heated throughout for those six minutes, they are done. If you have any leftovers, you can pick off the meat and use it to make dip, or any other type of crab meat recipe. Though they are tiny, these little crustaceans really pack quite a tasty punch.
Found in the waters of the south, mud bugs are really easy to catch. Not only are they fun for little kids to capture, they are also a lot of fun to eat. You can have yours with some melted butter or you can simply eat them on their own – either way, they are delightful. In the south, these miniature creatures are served with cornbread (or corn on the cob), though you can eat them any way you like.
While you may find many others methods of cooking crawfish out there, boiling them will work well every time. No matter how you make ‘em, these tiny delights are a great way to entertain a backyard full of guests.
