Cooking Halibut

Those that have mastered the art of cooking halibut know that this fish is one of the best on the market. Flaky, white, and mild-tasting, this fish can really be prepared in any manner.

The fish itself is a member of the flatfish species that can be found in the Northern Atlantic and Northern Pacific areas. Most of the time, large numbers of this species can easily be caught in the Gulf of Alaska, though some types can also be found in southern waters. Generally, the smaller the fish, the better it will taste, though some small ones called “chickens” within the fishing industry are rather expensive. Due to its mild taste, this type of fish can be substituted in tilapia (or other whitefish) recipes. Cooking halibut does not require a great amount of skill, though there are some things that you should know.

If you fancy yourself a grilling guru, you should know that this type of fish tends to stick rather easily. In order to prevent sticking, make sure to cook yours in a basket, or to oil it properly every ten minutes. On the grill, this fish should not take more than seven minutes – be very careful that it does not dry out! If you are going to bake it,  make sure to keep the oven rather low (200 degrees should suffice), and only bake it for approximately twenty minutes.

Other methods for cooking halibut include deep-frying, broiling, and pan-frying – really, any of these methods will work perfectly if you make sure not to dry out the fish. At all times, this type of fish should be attended to and well oiled. Otherwise, it is very easy to cook it to perfection. Also, most of the time you don’t even need any type of marinade or spice rub (the fish itself is rather tasty), though a few squirts of lemon juice will bring out the flavor nicely.



If you want a healthy meal during any season, this type of fish is a cinch. In fact, it is recommended that the average person eat seafood at least two times per day to remain in top shape, so why not pick up some of this fish tonight?

Cooking halibut may be simple, but it will also become one of your favorite meals without much of a fuss. Divine when it is dinnertime and lavish when it is time for lunch, this fish is ideal anytime.
