Cooking Butternut Squash
Cooking butternut squash requires a bit of imagination. Though there is nothing complicated about preparing this vegetable it is not recommended that the microwave be used.
A lot of people love to place vegetables inside of the microwave to cook fast meals, though this is not the best way to draw out the flavor of a squash. Instead, consider cooking butternut squash in another manner to really make the flavor of this delectable vegetable stand out. Since this gourd has been around since the time of the Native Americans, thousands of different recipes have been devised in order to create the best dish possible. This means that you will have to scour through various recipes in order to find the one that works for you the best.
If you have never made this type of vegetable before, you will be surprised at just how sweet a squash in season can be. Search for ones that are medium sized and firm in order to create the best meal possible. Once you have your gourds selected, you will need a few basic recipes to get you started. As previously mentioned, there are tons to choose from, though the following ideas may easily become some of your favorites.
Try peeling (be very careful when you do this), dicing, and boiling this vegetable until it is tender. Once it is cooked, place all parts inside of a bowl and mash with milk and butter for a warm autumn treat. Or, slice the gourd into thick slices, place them on a baking sheet lined with tin foil, sprinkle each slice with brown sugar and butter, and cook at 350 degrees for approximately twenty minutes. Another great way of cooking butternut squash is to hollow out some cooked potatoes, followed the mashed method above, and stuff the potato shells with squash (sprinkle with cheese for a real treat).
Now that you have some very basic recipes, you can begin to experiment with other ones that you may come across. It is nearly impossible to mess up this dish, so go ahead and get creative.
Try out many different ways of cooking butternut squash until you find the one (or two) that you can easily prepare with pride. This vegetable is a wonderful choice for any meal, and all are sure to love it any way that you prepare it.
