Cooking Weights and Measure

How important are cooking weights and measures when it comes to creating the perfect dish? Well, that depends… but most of the time they will turn a recipe into a success or create immediate failure.

Baking-wise, cooking weights and measures are indispensible. If you try to create a cake or a batch of cookies without measuring, the end result may be disaster. Likewise, when trying a dinner recipe for the first time, it is nearly impossible to get it right without considering the specifications that are within a recipe. Every recipe comes with a set of directions, though sometimes these directions can be entirely confusing.

What do you do if a recipe tells you to put a “pinch,” “dash,” or “shake” of something into food that you are preparing? If you think about it, everyone has a different meaning for each of the words listed above, which means that getting that meal to turn out right may be a battle. Instead, keep in mind that anything with the above “measurements” should be less than 1/8th of a teaspoon. While we’re on the topic of odd measurements, if a recipe asks you to “pack” something, make sure that the ingredient comes up to the top of the measuring cup, but not over it.

Once you have tried the same recipe numerous times, those cooking weights and measures may not matter as much. However, if you are trying out a new dish for the first time you cannot live without those specific directions. Most of the time, if you are using a good cookbook, you can find specific measurements listed at the back of the book. Or, you can simply find a measurement chart online, and print it out for your use. Either way, make sure to have some type of reliable chart to go by every time.

You will notice that chefs on television hardly every use specific ways of measuring items, but this is largely due to the fact that they have been making a specific meal for a long time. Beginners should always use measuring tools, just to make sure that everything turns out alright. Once you have that recipe memorized, you may not need any measuring tools at all – though you shouldn’t try this the first time around.

See how important cooking weights and measures really are? Now that you know how to properly prepare a dish, you are sure to create perfect items every time.
